[OGD] Coryanthes maduroana

In the latest Lankesteriana it looks like Gerlach uses scent to separate 
Coryanthes maduroana from C. mastersiana.  Admitedly, my high school Spanish 
isn't up to the task of understanding the whole article.  Can someone with 
more Spanish than me tell me if that is that what he's saying?  Or is he 
merely commenting that C. maduroana's scent is more chemically complex than 
other Coryanthes, like C. mastersiana's.  Page 70-72, April 2004 
Lankersteriana, Vol 4, no. 1.

And also, is scent a legitimate identifier, taxonomically speaking?  If one 
was to key out a species would one come across that one species has a scent 
and the others do not?
