Dear Linda,

please don't go comparing apples with pears:

1) the price of the production of a color page (size DIN A4) [which is slightly larger than most USA journals] is 1000.-- US at the utmost. That includes typesetting, super duper color separations, printing etc.
You should not compare that with the price of a 1/1 (meaning full page) advertisement which is calculated according to the popularity of the journal and thus according to the size of the run.

2) Also, people advertising at 100,000 US per page do not sell orchids or orchid paintings, I would assume that those advertising in "Architectural houses" sell "top of the line" properties and houses and luxury class vehicles ...

And we are not talking about the prices for advertisement in "Orchids", or at least not only. We are talking about the cost for the ordinary AOS Member who has to pay 60 US (or whatever it is now to get the journal and about those overseas members who have to add 40 or 50 US mailing costs on to of it and who ask whether they get value for their money or whether they'd rather not be a member of the AOS and obtain the rare article that interests them as a scan or a photocopy from a friend.

I just couldn't resist this one. I advertise "Orchid Painter" in the
ORCHIDS and ORCHID DIGEST magazines so I can speak to the cost of
advertising.
A few years ago I thought I might go all out and advertise in the
ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST. I called them and when I got off the phone I just sat
there.
The cost of a color page for one month's issue was over $100,000. Suddenly
ORCHIDS was not so expensive.
