The AOS judging preceded that of the Orchid Digest by many years! Helen
Adams, a brilliant woman, was the architect of the AOS judging system and
she laid a pretty darn good foundation, in my opinion. The ODC judges were a
bunch of second level judges from the Western States, in the main, who were
resentful of the AOS power base in the Northeast. Funny how some in the
Northeast today are resentful that the power base seems to have shifted
further South. Anyhow, there was a deal brokered and the ODC judges were
able to slide in the back door as AOS judges. One, at least, Ed Wright, did
things the honorable way and completed the then AOS training schedule.
Others became AOS judges of very variable ability. One, from the Pacific
Northwest, was well known for appearing only at WOC's every three years to
judge there. Maybe I can say we were grateful that's the only time we saw
him.
