Dear friend, we need some help with an oncidium papilio var alba. Can anyone send us the specific requirements (temp, humidity and so on)? We have been given the specimen by a friend, and the specimen is in terrible conditions (no leafs left, pseudobulbs getting yellow, lost all the roots). Does anyone know how to force it to re-root? WE have closed it in the usual plastic bag with spagnum, what do you think? Any other trick? Rina & Corrado

Germination has been excellent. The main problem in sowing on sphagnum has been separating the mass of seedlings when potting up. Once separated, I keep them in an enclosed environment to maintain humidity until fairly large. As for the Arundina, it can grow like a cotton field in some areas..but is ubiquitous everywhere at our lower levels..The Spathoglottis is not nearly so prevalent..but still may be found everywhere..just not in such abundance..It is surely self pollenating...a sore spot with all of us...The famous gentleman that set all this in motion (to feed his live stock, I am told) picked a crummy clone to do the job...You can see why...That clone had all those easy to come by pods on it. I had thought he must have done it by plane...but no...Folks who know say he did it from the back of a pick up truck. And believe me when I say that all three of those Orchids are here to stay...I have only seen the three honest to God true endemic Orchids of Hawaii once..they are hardly worth noticing...terrestrials.and insignificant. In the parks etc you will find many other Orchids that have found a home and are proliferating..Vandas, Dendrobiums and the like..Given time these too will be seen all over this island, at least.
