Well, seems I'm not the only one who likes Aerangises.
Of the responses Jay Pfahl seems to be the only one who this plant likes! His has rooted, grows quickly and needs no further assistance from Jay other than feeding. Therefore I need to duplicate conditions found in Key West, Florida. Sounds like increased ambient humidity and increased air flow, maybe higher night temps?? Jay what are the night temps like there in Key West? How cold does it get in winter for you?
Jeff, who grows his indoors in a Wardian case, brings up the point that even his limited case environment his plant doesn't spot, and I'll chalk that up to the r/o water he uses. Admittedly my area has water quality issues. So I guess I really do have to get better water, although increasing air flow will help too. But even Jeff's doesn't attach to its mount... so I gotta wonder if rooting is unnecessary for success with this plant? That doesn't seem likely. Usually the rule is grow good roots and the plant can help but flower...
Paul Simon provided a link to his web page which is an education in itself so I'll repeat it: http://www.colorkidz.com/orchids Wow, nice computer set up and interesting way to track the day/night temps out in the GH Paul! Paul also says that A. modesta grows slow for him, won't attach to the mount and spots, but he gives me a good clue by saying "the temperature at the plant may be too low for the humidity it sees". Good point. I'll bet I am making an error in trying to provide moisture via overhead misting nozzles instead of providing higher relative humidity. Probably if I damped the floor instead of misting I'd have better results. But that requires me to *be there* in order to do the damping since I'm not as talented as Paul where automation is concerned.
MaryLou in Florida tells me that benlate can cause these spots and just because we don't use the fungicide here in the US doesn't mean it isn't used elsewhere in the world.
Everyone seems to agree that cork is the material to mount it to, so I'll do that. With moss since I'm not in Key West (*G*) I thought I had good airflow, I bought larger fans last year and this year's new growth on the Gongoras is coming out clean. But the year ain't over yet.
Thanks for the input. I'll let you know what happens.
