Martin, all... (sorry to get in late on this...)
Regarding pollinators, at least some species and hybrids don't seem to need a specific pollinator.. I have seen (in my own collection and in the plants established in the garden trees here at the nursery) seed capsules on many orchids. A year or two ago, something pollinated nearly every flower on Asctm. miniatum (or garayi, whatever it is) in my shadehouse, my brassavolas and rhyncholaelias are regularly pollinated, this past spring three flowers on Epigenieum lyonii were pollinated (the fruit is maturing...), I have a capsule or two on a C. skinneri, several cattleytonias, C. intermedia... and soon I expect to see capsules on Encyclia tampensis, but of course this one is native in south Florida. I grow a lot of dendrobiums but have never seen one develop a capsule in my collection (interesting that the Epigenieum flowers were pollinated within a couple of days after opening). Many many species and hybrids in the cattleya alliance, however, are quite commonly pollinated by south Florida vectors. Julie
