when translated, one would assume that this is the type color form for
the species, if given no other information.


No, you can't assume that ... It is posible, but you would have to check in the original publication

Several literature sources
that I've read describe a "rare, orange-colored variant", so it seems,
again, safe to assume that the pink form is the basis for the species.



That is how errors (if there is one) get proliferated ... you have to check the original publication.
