Freedom of speech does not mean an exemption from the consequences of exercising that speech (just ask the Dixie Chicks). Some environments are just not appropriate for political speech (just like Mom said, no politics or religion at the table). I don't believe the amount or level of provocation excuses me from crossing that line. In a job interview I don't discuss politics either. When I evaluate a vendor as a possible supplier, I keep open to a variety of inputs not the least is the cleanliness of the greenhouse (you certainly pass on that one). As a gay man, I am also sensitive to any expressed or implied homophobia. I don't choose to stay in a hostile environment.
Let me use as an example two growers here in the Great Lakes area, both of whom are known to you, although I choose to let them remain nameless (to protect both the innocent and the guilty). One has expressed in my hearing as well as to a former employee a great deal of homophobia. The other I know is generally very conservative, but at least has been personally respectful. Guess which one of the two I will buy from, even though both have good stock and a clean greenhouse?
