I feel a need to comment upon the spat between Dr Braem and Prem Subrahmanyam.
People seeking help, guidance or information use this resource (OGD) to make
it easier to receive these. The very point of this is that each of us no
longer needs to go and reinvent the wheel. The knowledge of the ages has
accumulated because of the exchange of information. Everyone has been able to
get the opportunity of seeing further by standing on the shoulders of giants.
I have an undying admiration of most of the work of Dr Braem. It is indicative
of a huge underlying passion for the plants we all love so much and I feel
loath to criticise him. However I feel that his response to Prem has been a
bit harsh. He has, in essence, told Prem to go and reinvent the wheel. If
Prem's posting irritated him, it would be better were he to have ignored it.
It appears to me that Prem was simply seeking to find someone who had a ready
understanding of the taxonomic issues surrounding Habenaria rhodocheila, in
order that he could better understand what he was looking at.
My suggestion is to look at the work of Christenson in this area, by
consulting his articles:
ORCHIDS (AOS), February 2003, p. 136
ORCHIDS (AOS), March 2002, pp. 222-223
ORCHIDS (AOS), February 2001, pp.129-131
and then follow up on the references Christenson has given.
Attempting to find rare articles in old, obscure publications is often very
difficult, but will need to be done, if you are unable to have your questions
answered by the literature more readily to hand.
