Hello everyone, Two winters ago I was headed to an orchid society meeting where they were highlighting repotting techniques clinic in Vestal, NY. I stopped by a convenience store to get some of those recloseable tupperware type containers to use as compots for some seedlings and other containers adult plants, but the only thing even close to what I wanted were some Christmas decor tall coffee type styrofoam cups. Since I was already running a bit late I bought the cups. I potted everything I had brought along in the cups, tucked just a little sphagnum moss down the sides and (doing this first) cut some wide slits down the sides and bottom of the cup. I didn't notice right away but after a few months I was amazed at the amount of roots that were growing and heading straight down into the moss. Many of the plants are still in those containers and I will have to very soon repot them in larger cups that I've found because the roots are outsizing the cups. Most of these plants are phal species, and I grow under lights and on windowsills. I was wondering who else uses this method for some or all of their plants, and I was also told by a club member that they had read or heard about someone who exclusively used this method for potting their orchids (when they can find the right sized containers), so I'm wondering who this person was. Does anyone know of others using this method, and can shed light on to why it seems to work so well in an underlight setup? Question and comments greatly appreciated!
