This is one of the best posts I've seen on the OGD for a long time. Well done. I was doing a judging course 5 years ago and for the required study paper on some aspect of orchidology I wanted to do a fertiliser or potting media trial. I never thought of weighing the seedlings - I thought of looking at average growth height measurement in a compot of seedlings. Providing exact growing conditions for each compot and having an adequate supply of the same breed of plants relegated it in the too-hard basket for my limited scientific method. I was concerned that if your son needed to remove each seedling to weigh it, would there be a disturbance factor influencing the effects but if each seedling is treated equally, this wouldn't be so. However, I think your son's project has provided some interesting info for us all to share. It would be interesting to see a parallel study from someone in a different location.
