Dear OGD,
After speaking with Marcos Campacci, my guide and friend in Brazil, I have an ID for the Cleistes "the Bomb". It is Cleistes limbonii var coerula and has not been described as a distinct variety. We saw this species in Sao Paulo State Brazil, growing directly on the beach in full sun, not 20 yards from the water as well as at an elevation of 800 meters in deep shade. I guess it is fairly variable in the sites that it prefers to grow in.
The coerula variety was only found at the higher, cooler, shadier location. By the way as soon as I have a new computer and can use a disc drive I will have photos of another Cleistes species that we found in Minas Gerais at an elevation of 1800 meters. It has flowers that are slightly smaller [only 4" instead of 5"] and a different color pattern.
