It had never occurred to me to throw my clay pots into the self cleaning oven, but if it works on the ceramic briquets from the grill, why wouldn't it work on clay pots?? I've alwyas recycled both clay and plastic pots in the dishwasher. I clean them out in the sink, removing all debris, then run them through the normal cycle. I'm not sure what temp. is achieved but the care manual that came with the dishwasher talks about "sanitizing" not "sterilizing". I'm not sure if the distinction is critical, but my pots come out devoid of any algae or other stains and looking like new.
