\Hi Tern, congrats on appointment as curator of Orchids in Bflo. Lived near the Garden at one point and my wife grew up there.
Ive spoken to the orchid group a couple times and will try to get over and see the collection in the near future. On the vine/flowering issue, I suggest that the first thing you do is change the fertilizer to a high Phosphorus balance such as 10-52-10.
