"author and botanist Paul Martin Brown ... says there are 53 species and varieties of native wild orchids in Maine (62 in all of New England). Maine counties with the most species and varieties are Aroostook (40) and York (37).
... Brown's partner of 20 years, Stan Folsom, ... creates vivid illustrations of the orchids for the books Brown writes. He mostly works from photographs Brown takes but also works in the field.
Their first wild orchid book, "Wild Orchids of the Northeastern United States," was published in 1997. "Wild Orchids of the Southeastern United States North of Peninsula Florida" is due to be published in December.
Two more, "Wild Orchids of the Canadian Maritimes and Northern Great Lakes Region" and "Wild Orchids of the Pacific Northwest and Canadian Rockies," were completed this summer to be published in 2005-06...
Brown has done some teaching and is a research associate at the University of Florida Herbarium at the Florida Museum of Natural History. He also is founder of the North American Native Orchid Alliance and the editor of the North American Native Orchid Journal.
Folsom is a retired elementary school art teacher.
After the couple moved to Florida in 1997 from Massachusetts, it didn't take long before the University Press of Florida contacted them about writing a field guide on the wild orchids in Florida. ... "Wild Orchids of Florida," published in 2002, Folsom and Brown covered 30,000 miles tracking down Florida's wild orchids."
