My greenhouse is in Massachusetts which is far enough North to
have limited winter light. I added a high pressure sodium grow light to
supplement winter daylight. I can find plenty of advice about growing
orchids under lights but not about mixing sun and artificial light. Can
any of you advise me?
To introduce myself, I grow a mixed bag of orchids, mostly
intermediate temperature ones such as Oncidiums and Brassias in a 12 x
18 foot leanto greenhouse attached to my house. I try to keep the
minimum winter temperature to 55 degrees F. but I know, come cold
weather, some areas will be colder. In those areas, I have Cymbidiums.
The area under light probably can stay at or above 55 in the depth of
winter. Now the light is timed to be on from 3pm to 9 and from 9am to
11. I suspect that orchids need darkness but I could be wrong. Also I
water and feed the ones under lights no more than the others. I could be
wrong there too.
