Australia has many (>50 spp) alpine terrestrial orchids, invariably summer
flowerers, but they do need to be kept COLD in winter, or else they rot.
Same case with European alpines such as Nigritella and Orchis
(Traunsteinera) which seem to be difficult to cultivate at low altitude.

Exceptions are Spiranthes australis, which is hard to kill, and various
Corybas which form large clumps quickly in cultivation.
The leafless Dipodium locally can be spectacular, up to 120cm tall, whereas
the less showy Gastrodias are brown. Both genera appear around town in
sawdust/mulch, grow for a couple of years then disappear.
