Michael,

A quick look at the index of the AOS Bulletin shows a recent article written by Isobel la Croix titled 'Some African Orchids' in 1994's vol 63, pg 1132. That article - and since I can't find Rangaeris amaniensis in either Hillerman's Cultivated Angraecoid Orchids or Cribb's Orchids of Madagascar - makes me wonder if Rangaeris amaniensis is a Madagascan orchid at all.

But don't let that put you off trying to find Hillermans book. I think I finally tracked on down using ABEbooks or one other of the rare book search engines. It didn't take me long to find a copy once I set my mind to it.

Isobel doesn't say much about growing conditions for Rangaeris amaniensis, other than to say she had trouble blooming it in Scotland. She provides culture for Rangaeris muscicola: mounted on cork or in a container with bark and charcoal. She says potted plants of muscicola tend to be luxuriant and the peduncles are long enough for the spurs to hang freely. Rangaeris amaniensis is a larger plant than muscicola with an appreciable stem and bigger flowers.

Other AOS articles mentioning Rangaeris amaniensis are found in 37/1054; 40/407; 44/304. I hope someone with scanning abilities and a library can send you the articles. (Sorry, I don't have a scanner)

Does anyone know where I can find a copy of "An
Introduction to the Cultivated Angraecoid Orchids of
Madagascar" by Hillerman and Holst? The book's been
out of print for a while now, and I can't seem to find
a copy anywhere. I'm willing to pay for one or trade
for another out-of-print book that I have: "The Genus
Cymbidium" by Du Puy and Cribb. Has anyone had
experience growing Rangaeris amaniensis? I just got
one and it's pretty small (about four inches tall),
and I'm hoping that someone can give me an idea of how
big it needs to be before it flowers, as well as any
other information you can share (temperature and light
preferences (or tolerances), ease or difficulty of
culture, etc. Thank you!
