AFAIK, the southern swamps in Iraq were largely drained by Saddam Hussein to 
punish the Marsh Arabs.

I would have guessed that the majority of orchids would be in the mountains.  
As a child, I lived in Ahwaz, in southwestern Iran not far from the Iraqi 
border.  What I recall of the lowlands don't seem very favorable for orchids, 
but the mountains just to the north were full of wildflowers in the Spring.
