In fact both are right, depending on what you think is correct.
 
B. grandiflora is a validly published name, and if I recall correctly it has different shaped leaves, is a larger plant, does not grow in the same area as the normal nodosa, and does not have those few spots on the lip directly under the column. To check for the spots you almost have to remove the lip to see if they are there or not.

Wishing all a happy and floriferous new year!
I have three plants of Brassavola nodosa. Two are regular size, the other much larger altogether, which I have as B. nodosa var. grandiflora.
Is it a different species?
The smaller plants   come from Cozumel, Mexico and Lara, Venezuela. The larger plant is a division from a Jones and Scully plant, bought in  the Sixties and shown in their catalog as B. grandiflora.
Which is right?
