Marianne, you recently asked about the environmental damage caused by the tsunami. As you can see from the following press release and link, they are only just getting started:
A preliminary assessment has been made by the Global Environment Centre at the request of the Indonesian Ministry of Environment, based on analysis of selected satellite images of parts of the affected area as well as selected background information. This report is part of a larger programme being undertaken by the Centre in conjunction with other partners to examine the impacts of the tsunami on the regions coastal ecosystems and communities. The report focuses on the northern tip and west coast of Aceh province which appear to be the most severely affected portions of Sumatra island. You may download the document in PDF (1.5MB) from: http://www.riverbasin.org/ev_en.php?ID=3748_201&ID2=DO_TOPIC ------------------------------------ If anyone is interested, I have longer and more detailed postings from SOS (the Sumatran Orangutan Society) and Forest Watch Indonesia, both of whom have been active in Aceh for a long time, and both of whom have stopped most of their normal work in order to commit all available resources to the relief effort. Both are seeking donations in order to continue bringing aid to places other organisations cannot reach.
