Title: AOS Bulletin(s) / Digitization (scanning)

For Susan Taylor and others concerned  (OGD Vol. 7, Issue 39):

Regarding scanning AOS Bulletins or other copyrighted sources and putting them on the web.

If it is a matter of obtaining permission to place these publications on the web for non members to see, there may be a good compromise standing in the wings.

I encountered a similar problem with our local Orchid Society’s monthly newsletter which has become popular outside the Society, yet producing it is too expensive to permit regular mailings to non members.  I received requests to put it on the web so non members in other states and counbtries could have access to it.  After I (the Editor) presented my proposal to the Board to place the newsletter on the web for others to see and realized there was some concern, I modified my request.  Instead, I proposed waiting for two months after publication of a newsletter before placing it on the web.  That proposal was accepted.  We are now constructing a new web site and hope to have everything in order in the not to distant future.

Initial objections to my first proposal were based on the notion that those who receive the newsletter regularly pay membership dues to the Society.  If they see the newsletter on the web, they will resent that many others are getting a free newsletter and they (the members) are paying for it.  Whether that would actually happen has never been tested, but it was a fear of some.  A two month delay will allow members first access to take advantage of timed coming events in our area (which would be of little or no value to others at distant locations), and they would have ample opportunity to read and absorb the newsletter before it went on the web.  Once it is on the web, everybody else could enjoy the articles, color photographs, art, quizzes, and other features that have made it so popular.

A similar proposal to the AOS for their Bulletin might get a favorable hearing if not an agreement.  No harm in trying.

Good luck.
