Jim,
I am a coir / coconut husk convert. I use the coir for all of my seedlings and deflasking, for species that like a drier mix I add a little Aliflor or fine fir bark. Phals and Paphs love it straight out of the bag with a good leaching ( some suppliers have a high salt level ). I prefer the aged ones that are not as hairy as the green type and don't give competition for N.
I have also switched from fir bark to coconut husks for all my larger plants. It comes in several sizes, mostly I use the medium ( 1/2" chunks) for anything in a 4" or larger pot. Of course Vandas and the like have no media at all after the seedling stage.
