I am always amazed when people make statements that seem to me to have no basis in fact. We grow several million Phals a year in coconut chips and so far they seem to perform just fine. Maybe others grow them better but probably not a NY hobbyist. If you supplement the medium with the correct additives for pH correction and water with reasonable quality as the plants need it, I am sure you can grow most orchids in just about any medium.
