Natural gas contains ethylene, which causes bud blast in many plants, and ripening of fruit, and many other influences on plant growth and development. It is not classified as a plant growth regulator but probably should be. Any un-vented gas appliance is going to have the problem of releasing un-burnt gas containing ethylene in to the air. As the concentration builds up, it will cause lots of bud blast on your plants. Always use vented gas appliances in a closed environment like a greenhouse. If you want more information look up ethylene on the internet.

Colleagues:

As editor of a monthly orchid society newsletter I receive questions and requests for information from our readers. I pass this one on through the OGD because I suspect it may affect others too - as follows:

Is there a known correlation (read cause and effect relationship) between the use of an unvented gas fireplace and the blasting of buds, along with early demise of flowers, when orchids are grown in the home?

Thank you for any direct information or useful leads you can provide to help solve this problem.
