"The popular Sarasota landmark has a new leader.
Roger Birkel, who spent more than 30 years in senior positions at the Baltimore Zoo and St. Louis Zoological Park, will start as Selby's chief executive officer and president on March 7.
....
While he was a zoo administrator, according to Selby's release, Birkel raised more than $50 million and managed the care and presentation of more than 3,500 exotic animals that entertained almost 3 million visitors a year.
Selby, a nonprofit garden on 8.5 acres along Sarasota Bay, has 20,000 tropical plants and is recognized worldwide for its orchid and bromeliad collections. As chief, Birkel will oversee a $3.2 million budget and more than 50 employees.
...
More than 200 candidates applied for the Selby position. Birkel, according to a press release, was selected because he is "a leader with a solid success track record in both managing a business and interfacing as an ambassador within the community."
Selby is the legacy of Sarasota philanthropist and nature lover Marie Selby. The nonprofit botanical garden was founded in 1975."
