Thanks Sandy [Gillians]

for taking the time to put online some of her photos taken at the 18 WOC in Dijon.
If you take photos of Colombian participants or displays, I would be delighted to see them.

Thank you for sharing.

The presentation by the Singapore representative to hold a WOC:

"quite a number of reasons. One of them is that we believe we have got something fresh to show you, and we have given a little bit of evidence of this in our display...

About three years from now I hope we shall be able to offer you something further, and possibly even better orchids.

Someone has raised the question of the cost of travel. Some of us are fortunate enough I think to come long distances, but we are in a tropical country, described as Nature's hothouse. We have not many members who cannot travel long distances, they cannot afford it, either from Malaya, Java, Siam, Ceylon, Burma, Borneo, Japan, Formosa : Singapore is the focal point of the Far East.

We can offer decent hotel accommodation at very reasonable prices. We can offer you trips into the jungle either in Malaya, Borneo, Java or anywhere else, and other Eastern amusements, various types of food, and the glamour of the East. Some of you have been there before, but with us it goes a little deeper than that.

... We are commonly known as the under-developed countries. We are trying to develop ourselves, with the aid of the Governments of the United States, Australia and Great Britain. Governments and industrialists are helping us to try and keep off Iron or Bamboo curtains which are trying to engulf us. Anything the Westerners can do financially or morally could be of great assistance to us in that part of the world.

... We would be grateful to have you there. We can give you things that you will not see, possibly, anywhere else."

"16 respected orchid enthusiasts, who represent orchid growers and orchid societies around the world ... form the Site Selection Committee for the 20th WOC to be held in 2011.

The Committee will meet in Dijon, France, at 11.00 a.m. ...[TOMORROW] to review applications from Taipei (Taiwan), Cape Town (South Africa) and Singapore. Other details of the criteria that will be sought by the Committee and the Trust are published in the Guidelines.

Each organisation will be allotted 20 minutes for their presentation and up to a further 20 minutes for questions and answers if required. These presentations will be followed by a closed session for the Committee's discussion, after which a vote will be taken by secret ballot.
