It could be said that any organization is as vigorous as the least dynamic of its members [A chain is only as strong as its weakest link].
I guess that one should keep in mind that learning about orchids and how to grow them well is the common interest that brings together the members of an orchid society.
That being said, people who participate in an orchid society have some individual characteristics and talents that should be valued as a possible resource to attain the orchid society's goals.
Over the years, I have been a member of three orchid societies.
The most positive attitudes I have observed have been from people who share their knowledge, patiently answer the same questions over and over, and - most of all - value experienced members as well as beginners.
One of the best ways to make sure that the orchid society keeps its members is to value the voluntary work that is involved in the society's activities. Saying 'thank you' (like you should do when you have a query answered on this list...) and stressing valuable contributions from fellow members are good ways of keeping a society dynamic.
Taking for granted that the members of your orchid society owe you something for the sole reason that you bless everyone with your presence and leadership is not a good idea. Over the long run, you will get better results if you value your fellow members and treat them respectfully (not as a crowd of people who are there to glorify the 'happy few').
I certainly agree with Peter that 'new members' are most important to the continued vitality of an orchid society.
It is essential to integrate them to the society's activities and, in the process, help them to learn about orchids.
If you are an experienced orchid grower (learning something new every day...), do welcome new orchid members at your orchid society meetings or other activities, talk with them, inquire about which orchids they grow, why they are interested in orchids and, most of all, share, share and share...
