In a news story,

"A new orchid has been named after the name of the prime minister [of
Bangladesh] Khaleda Zia, as a mark of respect to her visit to the
Singapore Botanical Garden, the national orchid garden of the city state.

The orchid was named as 'Dendrobium Begum Khaleda Zia'...

The hybrid orchid has arching inflorescence bearing many fragrant flowers.
Each flower measures 4.5cm across."

It seems to be customary in Singapore to name orchids after visitors to the
country.
Is this a privilege reserved for heads of state ?

Have orchidists/orchidophiles been honored in a similar way in that country ?

Are there orchid species or hybrids named after Joyce Stewart, Peter O'
Byrne or other orchidophiles ?

Best regards,

Viateur

This priviledge is only for those head of states as SBG would have been delegated an order by our Foreign Affairs Services. Whenever a VIP pops by, an unnamed hybrid would usually be on the stand by to welcome the visitor when he or she pops by NOG.

In the normal case, it would be likely be the first lasy or the head of state's wife, since when the husband is off discussing policies with the local head of state, the wife would be given a tour of the island. Some times, they were named to commemorate an event such as the meeting of all the ASEAN head of state's wifes - Dendrobium ASEAN Beauty.

There are also hybrids named after the upteen visitor to Singapore (1 millionth, 2 millionth, etc). Those abroad may want to try their luck.

Other VIP or celebrities include Shah Ru Khan and Ricky Martin.

Most normal orchidophiles do not have the privildge to be immortalised in an orchid just like that. But then we can pay a nominal fee (SGD 4k - SGD 13k) to be named or to have someone named in an orchid.

Donors of substantial to the local orchid society or SBG had been honoured with hybrids, e.g. Oncidium American Express.

For more info on the VIP Orchid hybrids, OSSEA recently came out with a comprehensive book on hybrids developed in Singapore. There are plenty of info on how some of the names came about -

Species I believe there's a few. In fact, I believe that POB named quite a few species after his daughters.
