Dear Peter and OGD's
I have a plant of Acriopsis liliifolia "pfahl's flea circus" that I received a CBR/AOS at last years show. Mine, although I have had it for three years and bloomed it for 2, has 14 pseudobulbs but does not have any catch or trash roots. It, in deference to Acriosis indica, keeps it's foliage and grows like a weed. I do not give it a rest and have it in partial shade, weekly fertilizer and lots of air circulation. I have it in a 3" clay pot and it is bursting out with the new growths that are now appearing. I also have lots of ants [I grow outside] and they ignore it completely, taking notice instead of my Schomburgkias.
The original inflorescence [the awarded one] arose straight up to about 1' and then branched once and gracelfully cascaded down close to 16". This year[ it is just finishing today] it arose striaght up for 16" and then branched into three gracefully cascading 24" rhachis with about 125 successively opening flowers split between them with 10 to 15 open one each one at one time. It lasted well over a month and a half. This is a great plant and quite showy and I don't see why it is not more widely available. If as Peter says it has a tendency to be difficult in cultivation, I with my clone, have not noticed it. I tried to self it but had difficulty finding the viscidium and the pollina is quite small, so I will have to wait for next year.
My Acriopsis indica also grows but slowly, drops all its leaves in the winter and only has one new lead each year. Is this normal Peter?
Also do I have an odd clone of the liliifolia since it is hardy and problem free, as well as very compact and floriferous?
I am getting ready to add another 1 to 200 species to IOSPE in May after I finish adding the info from Selby's Icones Planetarium, so keep on visiting. By the way IOSPE [www.orchidspecies.com] now has an average unique vistor total of 544 with a record of 1126.
I guess the AOS plugs are helping add tothe user base.
Thanks all and happy growing!!
Jay Pfahl
