When you are, as I am, an interested novice sitting on the sidelines, it is sometimes interesting to watch the experts (and I certainly include Peter and Andy in that category) pick nits out of a statement or procedure, while studiously avoiding the obvious intent of the matter under discussion.

From my point of view, the American Orchid Society may have muddied the waters by classifying the CBR as an "Award."  Nevertheless, those of us with a little common sense, but not much more except for an out-of-date copy of the AOS Handbook on Judging and Exhibition, can read the definition of the CBR and come to the realization that CBR is not a competitive award like FCC or AM or even CCM. It is merely a means of documenting a species that has not previously been included in the AOS inventory. My reading of the CBR description is that it is not optional, but almost required that a judging team encountering a species on which there is no prior official description (within the AOS  system) record their observation so that future judging teams will have something to reference while making their evaluations of other plants at later dates.

If I were to question AOS judging standards and procedures, my question would be " How
can a judging team award an AM or even an FCC to any plant that has not been previously described for the record?"
