Jerry Fischer wrote (not too much, Jerry!) suggesting that the orchid community come up with an alternative way of dealing with trade in rare and threatened orchid species currently covered under CITES. I'm wondering if he has a suggestion to propose?

It occurs to me that he is personally behaving as a gentleman in his own business dealings re: Pk. However, it appears that there are many who are not and will not behave in this manner, leading to widespread destruction of the species in situ.

As long as there are dishonest people, how does one come up with a system that will not reward them while rewarding those who follow whatever rules and agreements are developed?

It occurs to me that it's highly likely that "illegal plants" become "legal" once legal plants of the species become available, whether through imported flasks such as Jerry's or flasks created from illegal seized plants, such as the Vietnamese paphs at AnTec.

Ideas?
