Hello all,
This fine Sunday morning I had the choice of either heading out to a known
spot to photograph some native orchids that had partially eluded me the
afternoon before (rain), or doing the dishes. Now, for people who know that
I only have one real day off a week, and also know that this is the
beginning of native orchid flowering in these generally Northern parts, will
be surprised to hear that *this* time I chose to do the dishes. As I often
wait long periods of time before giving in and taking care of my dirty
dishes, they often develop a distinct 'odor' (yes, I'm a bachelor, how did
you know), so I was not really looking forward to the task. This morning,
however, I was very pleased to find out that my flowering trichopilia suavis
which sits in my kitchen window/plant stand decided that this morning was a
good time to crank up it's fragrance, so when the breeze would come through
the window, I would get a healthy dose of its wonderful fragrance! It was
very effective at masking (most of) the undesirable scents from my sink and
helped greatly to raise my spirits and my general sense of well being, which
often sinks to great lows when doing things like dishes and laundry
(tonight's most likely task). A trip to my plant stands for a little
watering was equally pleasant, as my phals corningiana, lueddemanniana,
floresensis and parishii were also sending forth wonderful fragrances, while
my phal maculata and a phrag besseae were ready to wake me up with their
bright red flowers.
I'm supercharged for my laundry labors tonight, and even though my
Brassavola nodosa is starting to flower again (nightly fragrance), I doubt
that anything is powerful enough to cleanse my bathroom of the old laundry
smell; I don't even have a Bulbophyllum flowering with it's 'malefactory'
odors to distract me.
Who needs Glade plug-ins when you can have some fragrant flowering orchids
around?

Happy Spring and Memorial Day,
charles
