Roy;
I've gotta agree with your whole post there mate. When the Dockrillias were
separated from dendrobium there was very little, if any resistance to that
change. Why? Because it made perfect sense! The plants looked nothing like
a dendrobium, the flowers bore a fleeting resemblance although they did
hybridise quite readily with the 'mainstream' dens. They were split from
dendrobium, given a name honouring a champion of Australian Native Orchids,
we all accepted it and moved on. The new splitting of Dendrobium makes
absolutely no sense whatsoever, even though a couple of very respected
people have been involved in the splitting. I just think we need to step
away from the microscope sometimes and take a bit of a look at the real
world. To that end, Den Speciosum grandiflorum will always be just that to
me, Den speciosum curvicaule will always be the same and bloody Den.
Kingianum WILL NOT CHANGE!!! I think you'll find I'm not the only one who
is resisting change. I don't mind change as long as it is for the better,
and this aint! Curiously from what I can gather, the only organisation
really enforcing these changes appears to be ANOS. Something I have bought
up before was a case when I was involved as a show marshall at an ANOS
show. A novice had entered a plant of Den. Speciosum var. hillii. The
judges refused to judge said plant as it was incorrectly labelled.
Fortunately I happened to have a spare label or two and a pen so I swiftly
changed the name to Den. Tarberrii and they were happy. Imagine if instead
I had to tell a novice grower, competing in his first show, that his pride
and joy wasn't judged because he had the wrong name on it? Enough to turn
anyone of this magnificent hobby. I must point out that two ANOS judges I
have the most respect for, Steve Kemp and Irene Bodell, were not in
attendance at this show otherwise the problem may not have got as far as it
did. To answer questions, no I won't change my labels, yes I will continue
to show my plants under their real name and no, I don't hate ANOS,
botanists or anyone else!
End of Rant!!
