In his article (reference given earlier today by Bert van Zuylen, The
Netherlands), Dunsterville writes :
"Various reasons have been put forward to explain why ... Reichenbach
invented and published this very odd name of AA in 1854, but the one that
appeals to me the most is that he did it to ensure that a Reichenbach genus
would for all eternity stand at the head of any alphabetical list of genera
-- not only of orchids or even of plants, but of anything that was living,
had lived or some day might live on the face of this globe or outside of
it." (page 54)
Interestingly enough, Reichenbach once wrote : "Authors should do more than
secure to themselves the right of priority" (quoted by Reinikka, A History
of the Orchid, 1972, p. 217).
