Dear Iris,
During decades we grew an Encyclia species
horticulturally know to all in Brazil as Encyclia maderoi. According to Lou
Menezes this species was called as such because it grows on the banks
of Rio Madeira on Brazilian Amazonia, very far from the real E maderoi,
thus she described this species under a new name: Encyclia
edithiana.
Amazingly enough I cant see any major diference
from what we know now to be E. maderoi, from Colombian mountains. Every one
says they are two species but, as far as I know, no one has succeeded
to show any major diference between these that distant growing
species.
As I suppose the other was named after a
person, it is a remarkable coincidence, isn't it?
By the way, I recently managed to get one of
each location. I am just waiting for both to bloom to kill my curiosity.
Case one knows the diference, please do share
the information.

Encyclia is still being registered as Epidendrum. A cross of Sophronitis x Laelia x Epidendrum is a Stanfieldara. I can't find any registered cross between Sl. Jinn x anything with edith in the name. |
