For the past thirty years I have been using pins, hangers and hooks made from regular galvanized iron but at the monthly meeting of our SOEM we were told never to use metal baskets or metal anythings because the metal oxidizes and harms the plant.
I use metal stakes, but since they are only in casual contact, they don't seem to do any harm. However, I found that for whatever reason, rhizome clips, which exert a lot of pressure, were causing serious problems. Since then, I always thread a piece of a plastic straw over the rhizome clip. This alleviates the metal contact problem, but I still think the orchid would just as soon get rid of the rhizome clip as soon as possible.
