Subject: [OGD] Dockrillia transfers

Thanks Jose and Steve for the info about Brieger (1981) and Rauschert (1983)
taxonomic treatments regarding Dockrillia. I must re-read their work! Whilst
there has been a man-made hybrid between Dendrobium lichenastrum and
Dockrillia linguiformis, I don't believe that neither D. toressae or D.
lichenastrum belong in Dockrillia. This view is also shared by Clements and
Jones, and that is why those taxa were not included in their published
(1997) "Checklist of Dockrillia" that appeared in 'The Orchadian'.

David, I am not sure whether you are aware of the situation under which those transfers occurred. Brieger had published his treatment on "Dendrobium sensu lato" in the 3rd edition of Schlechter's Die Orchideen (which was started in 1971 and was finished by Senghas over 30 years later). Brieger (pers. communication) didn't give a hoot about the International Code of Nomenclature, his opinion was that this is just a bunch of "rules" passed by a botanist association who has no legal authority to do so (de facto he was right ... but that is another story). However, Brieger's view meant that he did not see the necessity to "validate" his transfers. Now comes Rauchert, a young orchid freak who wanted his name on many species. So he just published all the Brieger transfers in a form that made them "valid" according to the Code. As far as Botany is concerned Rauchert didn't know what the heck he was doing and therefore, his "judgement" is rather dubious. Brieger had been an assistant at Kew for some years before he went to Brasil, but he was mainly a Geneticist.

I hope this adds something to your informations
regards
Guido
