I don't know if you are referring to the same thing found here in the States, 
but spun basalt cubes are commonly used for hydroponics- particularly with 
tomatoes. Local hydroponics (reads: dope-growing) supply might have what you're 
looking for, if it's the same thing.

They do grow tomatoes very well- which, suprisingly, is what they're designed 
to do.

True. And not to excuse any publishers from being keelhauled for it, but the 
letter that arrived with my free copy of "an early finished book" last week 
(it's been a good month for free books) notes, all the way at the bottom in 
smaller type, "Note: The orchid depicted on the jacket cover is not a 'Slipper' 
variety due to design challenges."
