Please expand on your concern. It seems to me that any means to pass on
plants that are known as being actually salvaged/bulldozed/burned/etc is a
good thing ------- even if there is the 99% likelihood that those plants
would not be properly cared for and will eventually die. Even saving 1% is
better than nothing.
I am guessing (Yes, dumb thing to do) but I think My Friend to the North is
concerned that Evil Ones will rip out non-threatened colonies to sell.
Now I shall philosophize - which is even dumber given all the scientists in
the group. All to often the human animal acts out of fear of what might be.
I am sure that I will get flack for the comparison but here goes. In 1968
the Catholic Church decided to also ban barrier type contraception. The
primary (YES, primary) reason it did so was because it feared that approval
would eventually lead to the abortive forms of contraception. It was 'safer'
to ban all forms of contraception. The reality is that the Church lost much
credibility and abortive forms of contraception came anyway .. as was
inevitable for those who choose to fail to accept the zygote>embryo>fetus as
an existent human being.
Understand my point before rushing off to get the napalm. Fear driven
actions lead to very unintended consequences. Reflect on what is and will
come to be from U.S. actions following 9/11.
In this case I think orchids would be far better served by encouraging the
sale of salvaged plants to/by nurseries. Do our best to make sure they are
'salvage' but not so much so as to discourage/eliminate the sale. Stop the
E-Bays but actually help the legitimate nursery. Misgrown plants will die
anyway but some will live. As in all things - something IS better than
nothing.
I ask that non-orchid comments be sent off OGD so as to not clutter it up
with religion and politics. My comments were used as 'example' only for
amplification of my basic argument. :-) or even :->
