In OGD, Vol. 373, Issues 373 and 374, several postings mentioned plant physiology (with regard to foliar feeding and CAM cycle orchids). For benefit of newer growers who do not wish to purchase expensive plant physiology textbooks, but who might like to know the definition of CAM cycle plants, Kimball's Biology Pages are an excellent starting point.
Search for Kimball's Biology Pages. After you access the home page, click on the letter C, and you will find a definition of CAM Plants. (The pages on Photorespiration and C4 Plants were updated 11 December 2003.) At the bottom of the home page, be sure to read Dr. Kimball's message - that he welcomes comments, criticisms, and suggestions, but requests that his e-mail address NOT be added to the address book in your e-mail program. (The reason for his request is valid.) Additionally, in Chapter Five of Joe Arditti's 1992 publication: FUNDAMENTALS OF ORCHID BIOLOGY, there is a chart (Table 5.1, pp. 164-166) that contains a list of CAM cycle orchids. Among the various genera listed in the table, there are 13 cattleya species listed as CAM cycle plants - 1 of the listings does not name the species studied. The plant organs that were studied are listed in Table 5.1.
