To protect the endangered small whorled pogonia [Isotria medeoloides], land 
is being purchased inside the camp to keep deer and hikers from disturbing 
the flower's habitat.

The plant, which is a state and federally protected species, can remain 
dormant for years, showing itself only when conditions are just right.

It grows in only 30 to 40 sites nationwide, mostly in northeastern states.
