Kath; I too grow Stan. hernandezii in a basket and have had no problems. I use a standard wire basket, lined with Paperbark (bark from a native Aust tree, keeps the potting medium in, allows the inflouresence to punch thru). Some guys use cocunut fibre as the liner, I find it is too dense for the spike and seems to hold water for quite a while unless you use it thinly. Potting medium is my OLD Aust Native(Dendrobe, Sarc) mix consisting of pine bark and gravel around a 50/50 mix. When I say old I mean that literally, I pot my Stanhopeas after I have repotted my Aust natives and use the old mix from them to pot the Stanhopeas in. Works well for me, the only Stanhopea I own that I haven't been able to flower is Stan Jenischianna. I've even managed to flower Stan Xytriophora in that mix. A downside to using that mix is that I repot every year, but hey they love that too!! With flowering season for Stanhopeas nearly upon us I have spikes coming through the bottom of baskets all over the place! Cheers Paul
