Gail, You are almost correct (just a minor spelling mistake). The National Flower of Singapore is Vanda Miss Joaquim, a hybrid of Papilionanthe (Vanda) teres and Papilionanthe (Vanda) hookeriana.
The plant has been exported to many countries. It grows readily almost anywhere with a tropical climate, but it will also thrive in sub-tropical climates, and can be kept alive in cooler climates. Hew, Yam & Arditti wrote a book on this plant (Biology of Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore Univ. Press, 2002) which lists some of the countries in which the plant is grown: Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Australia, Hawaii, Barbados, Venezuela, Panama, Colombia, USA, Germany and Czechoslovakia are some of the places mentioned. I'm afraid I didn't spot Western Canada on the list. Cheers, Peter O'Byrne in Singapore >Could you please remind me of the proper name for the Singaporean national >flower, which I believe is a Vanda (Miss Joaquin?)
