"Biologist takes extra care to protect orchids from cold
...

COLLIER COUNTY With the bitter temperatures making their way to Southwest
Florida, one biologist is taking measures to protect precious orchids.
...
Larry Richardson, a biologist...
of US Fish and Wildlife...
records the temperature and humidity of the orchids.
...
"Our wetlands are diminishing, our orchids are disappearing, and I’m
looking for ways to keep them around," says Richardson

... no matter how cold it gets at night, it’s the water that will keep the
whole place pretty warm.

Larry says it holds on to the heat and gradually lets it dissipate
throughout the night.
... overnight reading shows it was 45 degrees in the swamp at the Panther
Wildlife Refuge.
...
About 200 yards away from the water, the temperature shows it was six
degrees cooler.
...
That’s a bigger worry on land, since there’s no water there to insulate the
orchids."
