Having successfully (more or less at least) grown orchids inside in 3
states
now, I can tell you that book recommendations vary with the reader-look
in stores and libraries to find one you like. If you worry about the
accuracy
of a particular book, ask here and I'm sure people will give their
opinions!
The web is also very useful (I try to always look at at least 2 sources
to see
if they agree), as are the many experts in this group. If you have a
particular
plant or type in mind, start with google.

Some of my orchids like relatively low light, others like more-and I've
had
some of each kind in Texas, Michigan, and now California! One I like a
lot
and celebrate each flower, I picked up at a orchid show in Dallas on our
way
from Texas to Michigan-with the car full of other stuff!

What kinds of orchids have you tried before?? Be as precise as possible
about what your growing conditions are (morning sun? afternoon sun?
no real sun at all?), and tell us what you've seen that you like the look
or smell
of. What's easy for me may be hard/impossible for others! And
sometimes
you can choose one that won't do well in your conditions OR pick a very
similar
plant that will thrive-orchids are amazingly diverse.

Yes, even in southern California, all my orchids are inside all year (too
cold right
here in the winter, and getting the bugs off to bring them in would be
impossible!),
and I grow several differerent genera. They don't all always make it,
and they don't
all bloom as often as they could-it's an experiment-and a victory when
they do well!

That orchid from Dallas will have been in my care for 12 years this
spring, and it isn't
my oldest!
