The first thing to do is get rid of the adults. A superfine oil (like Safer’s) should do the trick, then treat the survivors with an IGR like Enstar or Distance (Neem may also work). Keep a close eye out for new hatches and treat with a good insecticide, preferably one with systemic properties.

Subject: [OGD] scale control

A friend has a big scale outbreak on her orchids mainly because a small outbreak seems to have been ignored.

The scale is on leaves, canes including under the sheath and on the roots.  The ant populations are now removed.  Some of it seems to be mainly a hard scale.  It is beyond a white oil treatment.  Confidor and Folimat have been suggested as treatments.  Apart from taking great care with their use I would appreciate comments from others who have used this treatment or taken other methods to control  a large scale outbreak.

Thank you in advance,  Dick Thomson
