Hi Charles,
I can certainly sympathize with your chlorine battle. We have gone
through the same thing here, only on a larger scale (sorry to use that word). We
are presently using in our greenhouse, in addition to particulate & charcoal
filters on the r.o. line, charcoal filters on the city water lines which supply
the water to our faucets and under-bench misters ,
as significant problems continued even with the r.o. water for
plant watering.
So far, it seems that if you get really high-powered charcoal/particulate
filters, the plant symptoms disappear, but the standard charcoal filters seem to
lose efficiency rapidly with heavy use for humidifying and the symptoms come
back. I would suggest you try some of the in-line activated charcoal
cartridges, some of which can be gotten fairly cheaply, and see if they do the
job before escalating to more expensive remedies. The r.o. guys said the
cartridges can be gotten in places like Home Depot, but I've been
unsuccessful in locating a similar source so far. Ours fit in our old Cuno
canisters that were on the water lines since the 60s.
I assume you've been using a fertilizer tailored to r.o. water? A shift to
pure water means adjustments to feeding also, and your plants will react
adversely if you don't shift to the right ferts.
I would be curious to know what symptoms you have had, and on what genera,
if you would e-mail me off-group.
