Hi all,

My request for an identification on an Epidendrum species worked so well the other day that I thought I'd try my luck with getting an identification on a Clowesia species. The plant in question was sold to me as Clowesia glaucaglossa. After it bloomed last spring I was told it was not, and I was unable to find anyone at that time who could tell me what it was. The flowers were approximately 5 cm across. Here are two links to photographs...

Thanks for your interest.

Most Earthy biomass is microbial and thrives in the deep rocks, so one must
think of any consistent creator-deity as (a) subterranean and (b) fond of heat
and sulphur. Any orchid-related creationist deity must have an affinity for
insects, insofar as the raison d'?tre of the family is the rivetting of the
attention of bugs. Haldane, of course, thought that "that Almighty" had "an
extraordinary affinity for beetles", so it may be that is closer to the mark.
In place of beards and harps, therefore, perhaps the modern iconography for
creationism should tend to carapaces and stridulation?

Well I am working on it in my Bio 398A Evolution seminar. But somehow,
Moses was a bad scientist, he fooled us with his recipe and published
phoney results (that indicates that he must have been related to
Arditti). But then, if we succeed, we can make as many women as we want.
Would that be positive for the Advancement of Science? The result would
be even more shoes in the house ;-).
OK Ladies ... have a good go at me.

The point is, and I think Bob is making that perfectly well here, that
you cannot take one aspect of life at its own and neglecting the
"environments"

Thanks to Oliver Sparrow for passing on the article on speciation. This
is a thought provoking concept, worthy of consideration. We do require
systems to indulge our human need to classify and relate which will give
the Taxonomists unending scope for employment and arguing. Let's hear
a cheer for Hadrolaelia! Bernard C. Gerrard

Bernard,

Just an interesting side note on Hadrolaelia. It has now been split and the
former Section Crispae (Lindley) has been named Brasilaelia by Campacci in
Coletanea de Orchideas Brasileiras 4. Unfortunately Dr. Bream also proposed
a new name for section Cattleyodes (Schechter) (the same set of species) of
Chironiella in Richardiana 6(2), but Brasilaelia appears to have priority.

A friend of mine is writing an article about orchids and asked me what
was the most unusual place I'd ever seen orchids being sold. Other
than a grocery or big box store I was stumped. How about y'all? What
is the most unusual place you've seen orchids sold?

Sharon

Sharon,
Around here a man sells blooming orchids from the back of a truck at the farmer's market.

"a 10-acre Nature Conservancy wetland, whose population of rare
lady-slipper orchids plummeted when beavers left and brush invaded. Barber
hopes a few beaver will help restore orchid habitat.

So far, however, the lonely wandering beaver of Hubbard Creek [Oregon. US]
lacks a bucktoothed companion to share his lady-slipper orchid patch."
