Two comments on the Fakahatchee thread:

1.  I am sure that Jorge Melendez is probably right when he makes the comment about "North of Mexico" although I am not sure.  There have been 43 species recorded for the Strand although several of them have not been seen in years.

2.  Contrary to what Jim Miller reports there are still pleanty of orchids in the Strand.  The claim is more orchid species than anywhere else, and with 43 recorded, I suspect that it is true.  The bulk are epiphytes, and they grow off the tram ways in the sloughs.  It is not a place for an inexperienced person to go hiking by themselves.  I too was there in early March participating in a plant survey effort, and we saw some 20 species over a 3 day period (including a new colony of Habenaria distans).

Best Regards,
David
